Is Your Life a Guy Soap Opera?

Is Your Life a Guy Soap Opera?

The following takes place between 8pm and 9pm. Yes, My favorite TV show is 24. I love watching this totally realistic show about Jack Bauer saving the country from the bad guys.

My wife calls it a "Guy Soap Opera."

In a typical 24 hour period of time, Jack usually dies, comes back to life, has heart attack, gets a bullet wound, is tortured with a car battery and bare wires, falls in love, loses the love of his life, and is somehow able to walk in to the office of the U.S. President. Oh, yeah, he doesn't rest, eat or drink. And his cell phone battery never runs out!

All in a days work, eh?

Our lives are not quite that adventurous. But can you imagine if there was a "24" show based on an average day in your life? Yeah, just pick one random day -- today even -- and have it produced into a hit TV show.

Or, more realistically, what if we sat down at the end of each day with God and looked at each hour to see how our lives honored him. Yep, it's a biblical idea. In fact, the Bible tells us to "pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Allow me to suggest that this means to constantly be connected with God every hour of the day.

We get so caught up in the so-called 'big picture' -- those big accomplishments in life that take weeks, months or years -- that we forget that God is waiting for us in the 'details.' He expects obedience, prayer and worship on an hourly basis. We lose sight of that, then the 'big picture' really doesn't matter much.

  • How do we react when the car doesn't start on a cold morning?
  • Do we seek God's guidance at the start of each day? And, more importantly, do we LOOK for it during the day?
  • How do we handle success or praise from co-workers?
  • What about that cashier that just gave you too much change?

You get my point, right? If you break your day down to 24 hours, each hour is filled with proof of whether or not we are truly living for Christ.

The Message version of this scripture reads:

Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live. (vs. 16-18)

Have a wonderful 24 today!
