God's Masterpiece
I remember a few years back -- well, it was 1984 when I bought my first Guitar Player magazine. On the cover was this guy holding what had to be the ugliest guitar ever built. It was a Frankenstien of a guitar -- built in the kid's garage, using anything that he could get his hands on.
Eddie van Halen went on to record a 1 minute 50 second guitar solo with his ugly guitar that is still being talked about today. It was obvious that the Master (Eddie) playing his Masterpiece (ugly guitar) had created an amazing piece of guitar music that raised the bar for all of us lowly guitar player wannabees.
God created a Masterpiece in you.
Ephesians 2:10 says that we are "God's workmanship..." and Psalms 139 talks about how God 'shaped' and 'formed' you even before you were born to be "marvelously made." Genesis even describes how you were made in the "image" of God.
You were created to be God's Masterpiece.
But what do you see in the mirror? Do you see a reflection of God's grace and that "shining light" that Christ described you as? Or do you see...hurt...ordinary...flaws...pain...apathy. Do you just see yourself? Do you see yourself as a 'masterpiece' of God's creation?
A couple years ago, I bought the guitar of my dreams. Well, one of them, anyway. It's a beautiful Taylor acoustic and cost a small fortune. You can tell by looking at it that it is finely crafted masterpiece. In my hands...well, it's nothing that special. Just another average guitar player strumming three or four chords over and over. I can just picture the guy who created this guitar thinking to himself that I have no idea how amazing this instrument is DESIGNED to be.
Perhaps that's the problem with our lives. When we take our "masterpiece" lives and place them under our own control, we never experience the fullness of life -- that "abundant life" that God desires for us.
It's time for us to place our lives into the hands of the 'Master" -- the craftsman of our creation -- and allow Him to refocus our lives.
The Bible says it much better than I can...from Romans 12
So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you...Romans 12:1 [The Message]
You were created to be God's Masterpiece. Don't settle for anything less.
